The Gallop

The gallop is the horse’s fastest gait; some horses can reach a speed of 35 miles per hour at a full gallop. At one point in this three-beat gait, all four legs are off the ground at the same time; at another point, all the horse’s weight is supported by only one leg, as shown here.

Because this horse is viewed at an angle, the oval for the body must be angled. Block in the chest and hindquarters with circles, and use angular lines for the knees and face, as in step A. Keep the lines for the tail free-flowing.
