Shading
Once you have established the basic shapes and details of a drawing, you can add depth to the forms with shading. Create the illusion of three-dimensionality in a two-dimensional object with clear contrasts in value, or the relative lightness or darkness of a color or black. Pay attention to the value gradations in the lights and shadows of the egg at right and the final, colored image below. You can shade a drawing with pencil, ink, screentones, or any medium used to color.
