Tree drawings provide ample opportunity for practicing cast shadows. When drawing cast shadows, note these few observations: (1) a shadow follows the shape of the ground or area on which it is cast; (2) value changes can occur within the shadow; (3) surface textures and details may be discernible within the shadow; and (4) lighter areas may appear within a shadow cast by tree foliage.
For any accurate drawing, you need to be aware of the light source and render its effects. In this drawing, the sunlight shines through the gaps in the foliage and is projected onto the ground plane.
