OVERVIEW

As we set out on our journey with this book, the first leg takes us through a potted history of automobile automation, establishes a number of definitions associated with such technology, and reviews a variety of classifications of automation from the human factors perspective. We consider where driving automation has been, where we currently stand (at the time of writing, at least), and where it might be going in the near- and long-term future. This gives us a basis to consider various contemporary definitions and classifications of automation, from classical approaches to more recent taxonomies.
