So we finally reach our destination, and the last leg of our journey revisits the story so far, summarising the ‘promises and problems’ of automated driving, before going on to consider in detail what we have learned for the design of such systems from a human-centred perspective. More discussion is had on adaptive systems and interface design principles, but the bulk of the chapter is given over to advocating a number of high-level design philosophies for driving automation.
