Introduction: Why Use a DSP?
In order to understand the usefulness of programmable Digital Signal Processing, I will first draw an analogy and then explain the special environments where DSPs are used.
A DSP is really just a special form of microprocessor. It has all of the same basic characteristics and components; a CPU, memory, instruction set, buses, etc. The primary difference is that each of these components is customized slightly to perform certain operations more efficiently.
