Metrics

Society expects performance to be at a defined standard, albeit variable among cultures, and organizations are no different. We measure the value of an employee to an organization by the quantity and quality of the work performed. For example, as children grow and develop, we measure their progress in height, weight, and other physical measures. As children begin school, we measure their proficiency in learning through examinations, and as adults, we measure every aspect of our lives against some standard. As more and more standards are accepted as the norm, we find that we cannot perform all the work society demands, so we become selective. Our work environments are no different.
