Single Degree of Freedom System: Periodic Loading

4.1 INTRODUCTION

Sometimes it is very difficult to express dynamic loading in terms of an equation. If this loading happens to be periodic as shown in Figure 4.1, then it is possible to express it in the form of Fourier trigonometric series. Each term of the Fourier series represents a harmonic component. The response of a SDOF system due to harmonic loading has already been computed earlier. The response to each term of the series is then merely the response to a harmonic loading, and by the principle of superposition the total response is sum of response of each individual harmonic term.
