CHAPTER 9

Two-degree of Freedom Systems

9.1 INTRODUCTION

A study of a two-degree of freedom (DOF) system explores how to write and solve the equation of motion, find frequencies and mode shapes and interpret its results. It leads to a very special area of highly practical importance known as vibration absorbers. These vibration absorbers are mounted in all kinds of structures where vibrations are a problem, for example, buildings, theater floors, bridges, automobile parts, aircrafts and machines. Tuned mass dampers are special cases of the vibration absorbers. The theory of vibration absorbers and tuned mass dampers are discussed along with real-life applications.

Let us consider an undamped two-degree of freedom ...
