Systems with Distributed Mass and Elasticity

11.1 INTRODUCTION

In the previous chapters, we have discussed the dynamics of discrete single degree of freedom (SDOF) and two-DOF systems. There are situations when it is required to determine the vibration characteristics of a system with distributed mass and elasticity or a continuum system such as a chimney or a flexure member having different boundary conditions. The mass and elasticity or stiffness of such systems are distributed along their length. The variation of mass and stiffness may be uniformly distributed or uniformly varying.
