CHAPTER 14

Analysis of Liquid Retaining Structures for Earthquake Force

14.1 INTRODUCTION

Liquid retaining tanks are used in industry to store different kinds of liquids, such as, water, gaseous, petroleum products, chemicals, and other products. In India, they are used extensively to store and supply drinking water to the community. These tanks are made of reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, or steel. These tanks can be classified as follows:

  • Overhead tanks
  • Underground tanks

They are further classified based on their geometry:

  • Rectangular tanks
  • Circular or polygon tanks

The circular tanks consist of a combination of cylindrical, spherical, and conical thin shells. Ring beams are provided at the junction ...
