Long before it was even labelled collage, many folks were horsing around with the concept using various materials.

As far back as the 12 century, Japanese poets wrote on torn and pasted sheets of coloured paper. In 13th-century Persia, leatherworks used images and goatskin to make book bindings. They also used leaves and flowers. Before the 16th century, Europeans cut paper and parchment for coats of arms and assorted family badges and emblems.
