Mac OS X is the operating system software for Macs. The operating system is sort of like the “manager” of your Mac. It tells the Mac to start up, shut down, open a file, start an application, and so on, based on your interactions and settings that you can customize. The current version of the Mac operating system as of the printing of this book is called Leopard and is version number 10.5.

You can customize settings such as the keyboard and mouse interaction rates, the desktop picture or screen saver in the System Preferences application. For viewing files, you can customize the way files appear in the windows on your desktop.
