Keywords are the words or phrases that people type in the search field when using a search engine. Your goal is to match what they type in the search engine with the words on the front and back end of your web site. I discuss adding keywords to the front end of your web site in the upcoming chapter, Home Page Content. In this chapter, I'll cover how to provide a specific list of keywords that are just meant for the search engines. This list of keywords resides in your source code (behind the scenes) and is not visible on your web site.

Your keyword list should make up all the words that a person would use when looking for your product or service on a search engine. You should include cities in which you do business, product and service names, and other common words used to describe your business. Your keyword list is located in your web page's source code, and usually starts with the header <meta name="Keywords."
