Preface
This book is intended for general use by readers interested in ecological sus-
tainability and the complex issues affecting it, or by college students in a one-
semester seminar or classroom course that has the purpose of acquainting
scientists, including chemists, ecologists, environmental scientists, biologists,
engineers (civil, mining, and sanitary), political scientists, and others, with sus-
tainability and how we can deal with its issues. We have focused on the many
complex systems that interact to challenge human sustainability; we also have
introduced the reader to the basic area of complexity and complex systems.
