6 Ecological Sustainability

is seen where there is a robust economic system with adequate employ-

ment and a low rate of ination, and where there are adequate supplies of

affordable food, energy, water, housing, and health care available, per capita,

to enable “comfortable” living at a reasonable cost. Sustainable living also

requires healthy ecosystems and taxable wealth to provide effective gov-

ernment services including health care, public transportation systems, and

communications. Wealth is also required for robust commerce, agriculture,

education, health care, and housing. Robust economic planning must be pro-

vided by the government to set sound, long-term policies on taxation, gov-

ernment spending, market regulat
