Abstract

President Obama argued that his opponents were stuck in the failed economic policies of the past that emphasized tax rate cuts, less regulation, and a smaller government with a strong defense. He offered an alternative vision in his inaugural speech. President Obama correctly argued that we should not be concerned about the size of the government per se, but rather the focus should be on a government that works. President Obama had a clear vision of what he wanted to accomplish. His policies and initiatives can be described as based on the expansion and enactment of the social safety net and income redistribution programs as the potential drivers of an expansion of the public sector.
