7Vehicular Networks

Vehicular networks form an environment that is developing very rapidly. The transition to reality is near and will become a reality with the autonomy of vehicles that will need to interconnect to talk to each other and make decisions together. In fact, three types of vehicular networks will be overlaid: the control network, which allows the automation of driving, the passenger data network knowing that the driver himself will become a passenger and finally, the manufacturers’ network whose objective is to follow the life cycle of the vehicle, to carry out maintenance and to make repairs, sometimes while driving, following a failure analysis.

7.1. Communication techniques for vehicular networks

Vehicular networks are a great example of participatory networks since all components are mobile and independent. The system must be formed by autonomous vehicles that are able to take care of themselves if they find themselves alone. However, if the vehicle is connected, the automation processes are much more efficient, and the vehicles will be able to move much faster. An example of a vehicular network is described in Figure 7.1.

In fact, three vehicular networks are overlapped but do not require the same quality of service.
