Chapter 11:HDTV, 24p, and the Future

Writing about the future is dangerous. Time is the test of any predictions, and even the most well-educated guesses can seem ridiculous in the years to come, particularly when it comes to technology. One of my favorite books is a 1950’s science work about outer space. The book quotes the scientists of the day, including Arthur C. Clarke, and claims that one day “soon” we will have outposts on asteroids and study Venusian swamp creatures. Computer mogul Bill Gates was once quoted when he asked why anyone would need more than 720K of storage.

With those thoughts in mind, this chapter is not so much a prediction of the future as it is a report of what is here today and might become widely accepted.
