You can apply effects to a clip that are based on the use of filters, also known as plug-ins. In reality, filters are special text scripts that FCP can read and apply to clips to produce special effects. If you invest a little time, you can actually learn the programming language, FXScript, and build your own plugin filters.
Rather than adjust one physical element of a clip at a time, like the Motion tab attributes, filters usually change many different aspects of a clip at once. Instead of being designed to change the raw physical attributes like scale or rotation, filters usually produce a specific type of desired effect dreamed up by a programmer, such as Gaussian Blur or Fisheye Distortion.
