Visitors rarely drive in New York City; to out-of-towners, driving in the city can feel like mental suicide. Traffic is legendary, parking is impossible, drivers and pedestrians ignore all signs of control. Driving in the bottom of skyscraper canyons, the only landmarks are rivers and tidelands. Wrong exits lead to tunnels and bridges to places like New Jersey. Uncertainty is a sign of fear. California license plates are just another excuse for irritated honks and angry gestures.
