Part 2: During the Meeting

In my research on corporate meetings, I found that during data collection interviews with team members that “getting off track,” “wasting time,” and “not accomplishing anything useful” were the biggest complaints.

The biggest problems are:

1. Topic Migration. Migration involves bringing up either an irrelevant topic or an intellectually challenging idea that is not on the agenda.Solution: One good way to address this problem is simply to intervene with a clear comment such as “It looks like we have drifted from the agenda topic. Let’s get back to the agenda now and put this current discussion in the ‘parking lot’ for future consideration.”
