Studio Rehearsal

Directors work in several quite different ways, ranging from straight-through continuous shooting to piecemeal approaches.

Rehearsal begins – blocking

Some directors begin studio rehearsals with a dry run (walkthrough), in which the studio crew watch a performance (without cameras) as they learn of the production format and treatment. (Remember, only key members of the team have attended planning and rehearsals.)

For most directors, though, rehearsals begin with camera blocking (first run, stopping run, stagger through). A few prefer to work beside a mobile picture monitor on the studio floor, calling shots, checking and altering where necessary, until each section is complete.
