Transmission Lines

9.1 INTRODUCTION

The previous chapter dealt with wave propagation in unbounded media (media of infinite extent). Such wave propagation is “unguided”. In unguided propagation, a uniform plane wave exists throughout the space. EM energy associated with such a wave is spread across a very wide area. Wave propagation in “unbounded-media” finds its use/application in TV or radio broadcasting. In such applications, information is being transmitted for anybody who is interested. Such wave propagation is not desirable in telephonic applications. This is because information is received privately by one person only.
