Surface-Plasmon-Polariton Waves II

6.1 Introduction

The practical application of simple SPP waves guided by the interface of a metal and a homogeneous isotropic dielectric material in chemical sensors has flourished during the past two decades [3,4]. To a lesser extent, simple SPP waves have been pursued for microscopy. Recently, the excitation of SPP waves, guided by an interface of a metallic surface-relief grating and a periodically nonhomogeneous semiconductor, has been examined to enhance the absorption of light by thin-film solar cells [84].
