To understand high-frequency and RF electronics, you must first have a good grasp of the fundamentals of electromagnetic fields. This chapter discusses the electric field and is the starting place for understanding electromagnetics. Electric fields are created by charges; that is, charges are the source of electric fields. Charges come in two types, positive (+) and negative (–). Like charges repel each other and opposites attract. In other words, charges produce a force that either pushes or pulls other charges away.
