Academic library consortia and the evolving role of electronic resources and technology
Abstract:
Although diverse in the projects they have taken on, academic library consortia are historically centered on two primary goals: sharing collections or sharing systems. With electronic resources and the challenge of licensing, sharing collections takes on a new complexity, as does sharing systems, which requires a different approach than that used with the integrated library system. While some of the predictions on future consortial projects and relationships discussed here are natural outgrowths of past practice, some are new opportunities based on an environment in which electronic resources are truly dominant.
