CHAPTER 11Guard Your Time

Imagine with me for a second. You take 10 thousand dollars in cash out of the bank. You want to keep it in case of emergency, and you know that you will need to hide it well if you expect to still have it by the time the crisis happens. You decide to either bury it on your property in a waterproof bag, keep it concealed under your mattress, or put it in your air conditioning duct. If you have a better idea, then imagine that. With that amount of money concealed somewhere on your property, how confident would you feel about its security? How often would you check on it? Every time you have company? Every day? Ten thousand dollars is a lot of cash, after all.

We have a natural tendency to guard our money. Most of us use a balance sheet so that we can keep track of how much money is coming in and how much is going out every month. We know how much is in our savings and our retirement accounts. We know if we can afford a new car or even a new shirt. If other people feel entitled to our money, we are offended. It is your money, after all. No one else can say that they believe it should be theirs. You earned it and giving it away is your choice. Money doesn’t come easily after all. It takes time to earn it, and you never know what is going to happen in the future. If we feel so strongly about how we get, use, and give our money, then why are we so easy to give away the one thing that we cannot get any more of. Our time.
