Corporations are successful at utilising resources, maximising efficiency, lowering costs, maximising profit. But we’re now in an era of perpetual change, disruption, adaptation, innovation, and those are all inherently risky.
Think of the bravado and the confidence that people present — whether it’s when presenting quarterly earnings in front of Wall Street, whether it’s as a CEO talking to your people, whether it’s when you’re making a presentation to your boss, never let them see you sweat. There’s this sense of putting on confidence and presenting certainty, but we live in an era where there isn’t certainty, so it’s false certainty, right?
If you’re doing innovation of some kind, by definition it is a speculative act. There’s no guarantee of desired outcomes. You’re making smart, educated bets and you’re learning how to minimise risk in that process, but there’s tonnes of risk and volatility and unknowns. The question becomes, how do you bring integrity to the process of speculation?
