The Emerging Role of Aquaporins in Plant Tolerance of Abiotic Stress

“Water channels”, now known to be formed by transmembrane proteins called aquaporins, facilitate the movement of water across membranes in all known organisms. The aquaporin family in plants is comprised of more than 30 genes belonging to several subfamilies involved in numerous aspects of plant physiology and particularly responsive to abiotic stresses. Determining aquaporin involvement in plant stress tolerance is complex because of isoform multiplicity, their responsiveness, and regulation on multiple levels.
