Years ago, on a trip to Costa Rica, walking through the rain forest, Lola recalled an important lesson she learned. The guide suddenly stopped her asking her not to move.
“Look four inches from your right foot.”
Lola looked, but there was nothing there. There were just a whole bunch of leaves. It is a rain forest!
“I can’t see anything other than leaves,” Lola said.
“Look! The thing you think is a stick is a long tail. The thing you think is a stone is an eye. That is a nightjar.”
The nightjar is a bird that nests on the floor of the forest. It was four inches away from Lola’s foot, and she could not see it until her guide pointed it out.
