Aims and objectives of this chapter:

• Discuss the cash balance pension plan

• Introduce the money purchase plan

• Discuss issues related to the simplified employee pension plan (SEP)

• Introduce the 403(b) plans

• Analyze the issues related to a 409A plan

• Discuss 457(f) and 457(b) plans

Chapter 5, “Retirement Plans,” covered the traditional methods of providing retirement to employees: namely, defined contribution pension plans and defined benefit pension plans. This chapter discusses alternative forms of retirement plans, many of which have been developed as an evolution of the previously covered traditional plans. This chapter covers the following plans:
