In 1990, Elizabeth Newton of Stanford University ran an experiment with 40 students who were asked to “tap” out well-known songs with their fingers while another group of 40 students tried to name the melodies. Each tapper was partnered up with a listener. Tappers were told to pick a well-known song such as “Happy Birthday” and tap out the rhythm on the table.
