Composition, Light & Color
When I strip a painting down to its basic construction lines, it should make sense on an abstract and a figurative level. The construction drawing should reinforce the composition’s strength and also clarify any flaws so that I can correct them before moving forward. To help with this, I keep a mirror behind my desk in my studio to view my work in reverse. This different point of view allows me to “see” my work in a completely different way. Give yourself as many opportunities as possible to consider your composition in the early stages.
