Service Selection Gateway Overview
In the first implementations of DSL before the SSG, DSL users would typically be sent to a single service, such as the Internet, corporate intranet, or extranet, through a single virtual circuit to that particular network. Any need for additional networking required another circuit. This additional DSL networking required days, if not weeks, to provision the circuit, adjust billing details, and so on, much like changing voice service not so many years ago.
Now network providers can offer various selection options according to the DSL subscriber's class of service and subscription. There are service provider options for both simpler OSI Layer 2 SSGs and more complex and more robust Layer 3 SSGs.
