Chapter 7. Link-Specific Tools

This chapter discusses link-specific QoS tools needed on links of a specific type such as Frame Relay or MLP, including the following topics:

  • RTP header compression

  • Link Fragmentation and Interleaving

Link-specific tools refer to mechanisms that are enabled in a point-to-point manner on both ends of WAN links. These tools combine Layer 2 and Layer 3 features in their functionality. This chapter covers two types of link-specific tools:

  • Header-compression techniques—These mechanisms can reduce bandwidth requirements for both voice and data traffic.

  • Link Fragmentation and Interleaving tools—These mechanisms minimize serialization delays common to slow-speed WAN links.
