8The Big Four Energy Blocks

There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.

—William Shakespeare, Hamlet

“Something you've never asked anyone to do before? It won't be like one of those crazy reality show stunts, right?” he chided. “Just so you know, I'm not eating anything disgusting or doing any fire walking.”

“No, no, nothing like that,” I assured him, chuckling. “It's only that my gut tells me we should try something unusual. If it's okay with you, I'll wait to make my request until after I've told you the purpose of what we'll be examining next.”

“Sure, why not?” Richard had been laughing before, but now he looked genuinely relieved that I wasn't going to present him with a bowlful of crickets or something worse.

I had mentioned the Big Four energy blocks to Richard in an earlier conversation, and now it was time to explain them in detail. When I asked if he was ready to remodel himself and his business by recognizing and removing these energy blocks from his organization, Richard told me he was more than ready – he had already begun the process. In our work together, Richard had come to realize that many of the obstacles he was facing were based on inaccurate thinking.

Richard clarified, “Before, I was chained to an identity I thought I'd be dragging around with me for the rest of my life. Now I feel liberated to choose who I'll become, and that includes being a true leader.”
