Chapter 10

Transportation

Abstract

Transportation is a major energy use in the global economy, and as such, a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Recent developments have renewed the drive to improve the fuel efficiency of passenger vehicles and trucks, after that effort basically stayed flat from 1985 to 2000. The new efficiency standards are being driven by government regulations, rising fuel costs and growing concerns over global warming. The advent of practical and affordable electric vehicles (hybrid and all electric) has changed the dynamics of the market place as well.
