Chapter 13Working with Other Forums

Engaged owners don't operate in a vacuum. Their work is intended to take into account the needs and wishes of the wider family and to guide the work of the board and management. Once the groups are defined and the forums—Family Assembly, Owners Council, Board of Directors—are created, the work begins.

For a group of owners just beginning the work of engagement, the first step will be getting the Owners Council and Family Assembly up and running.

Engagement with the Family Assembly

Family Assemblies vary widely. Some boast vibrant leadership, 100 percent family participation, and well-subscribed group activities such as family retreats, picnics, parties, newsletters, webpages, and educational events. Others are smaller forums with more limited engagement—perhaps an annual family gathering. Clearly, an active and inviting Family Assembly can be a tremendous asset for a family and for engaged owners of a family business, because it can achieve stature as the voice of the family.
