10.10 Applications of lasers

Lasers find applications in various fields of science and technology. They are described below:

(1) In communications:

1. Lasers are used in optical fibre communicatiuons. In optical fibre communications, lasers are used as light source to transmit audio, video signals and data to long distances without attenuation and distortion.
2. The narrow angular spread of laser beam recommends that laser beam can be used for the communication between earth and moon or to other satellites.
3. As laser radiation is not absorbed by water, so laser beam can be used in under water [inside sea] communication networks.

(2) Industrial applications: Lasers are used in metal cutting, welding, surface treatment and hole drilling.
