For most organizations, electronic discovery (eDiscovery) goes hand in hand with records management. In SharePoint, the two are used together to enable the gathering of content associated with a specific matter. A matter is a topic of interest related to compliance, legal, or audit activities.
The reason organizations initiate eDiscovery is to compile content that meets a specific criterion that can be associated with a matter for analysis. A wide scale audit or litigation can become very expensive. It all comes down to the ability to find the information that is required to support eDiscovery.
