The user interface of an application provides the basis in which the end user, in many cases your paying customer, judges its value. If you doubt this, reflect on the experiences and emotions you have whenever you are exposed to a new development tool interface. More than likely your initial impression comes from cosmetic appearances like color schemes, widget layout, etc. A bad initial impression can influence your perception of the actual effectiveness of the tool. Next, users place weight on the intuitiveness of the application's features. In short, can the user do what he wants to do without instruction or documentation?
