6.1. Application Signing

Application signing is a technology that Apple has implemented in OS X that seeks to address the issue of application identity and integrity. This technology provides protection to the operating system so that it can both uniquely identify an application and also determine whether the contents of the application have been modified. This includes integrity checks to both the application payload (the main function of the application) as well as the metadata about the application: its bundle identifier, version information, and the like. Once signed, if any of this information changes for an application, the OS will be able to detect that such a change has been made, and act accordingly.
