“I need money to start a business venture” is usually the opening line when an entrepreneur walks into my office. Most of the time, however, I discover that these entrepreneurs haven’t done the homework they need to do before approaching an investor. Once I ask them a series of questions, they soon find out how badly they would have stumbled had they talked to an investor before they were ready.

Two major fallacies about startup funds make successful funding difficult. They are

  • The more money I get, the better. I can use as much as I can get.
  • My business plan numbers are just estimates — the investor will tell me what I need.
