4.1 INTRODUCTION
The availability of a water supply, adequate in terms of quantity and quality, is essential to human existence.
Historically, humans recognised the importance of water from quantity viewpoint. It is an established fact that civilisations have developed around the water bodies that could support agriculture, transportation and provide drinking water. Of late, the importance of water quality has now been recognized as a result of the developments of biological, chemical and medical sciences. Such advancements have clearly established a link between water quality and its effects on human health and well being.
