Chapter 8

Shareholder engagement

Abstract

Investors seek to influence corporate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) behavior in two important ways: by engaging in dialogue with boards and executive management and by voting on shareholder resolutions. In recent years, institutional investors have become more formal in investee discussions and have increased their participation in shareholder voting. More ESG issues have been included in corporate resolutions. Institutional investors have also joined together in several associations to pursue join interests in corporate engagement.
