Chapter 11

ESG in managing college and university endowments

Abstract

University campuses have been at the forefront of action for social change on many fronts but only 18% of 802 reporting academic institutions consider environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria in their endowment portfolio investment decisions. This chapter looks at the reasons behind the modest number of institutions with ESG investment policies, and explores the practices of those institutions which do have ESG investments.
