Chapter 12

ESG in managing sovereign wealth and government sponsored funds

Abstract

The largest sovereign wealth fund (SWF) is the $1 trillion Government Pension Fund-Global of Norway, which was established in 1990 as revenues from North Sea Oil accumulated to meaningful sums. The top 10 SWFs have a combined total assets under management (AUM) of over $5.254 trillion and account for roughly three quarters of the total for all SWFs. The total AUM of all SWFs exceeds that of the global private equity and hedge fund industries combined, and is projected to grow to over $15 trillion in 2020. This chapter provides background on SWFs and goes into detail on the environmental, social, and governance investments of several of these funds.
