Abstract
The cultures and policies of scientific workplaces exert a strong influence on the individuals who work in them and on their perceptions of work/life issues. These workplaces can support the career growth and development of those whom they employ and/or educate by supporting effective mentoring and networking that address the balance of professional responsibilities with personal priorities. Mentors can be superb models of the multiple roles of a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics professional, family member, and community member.
