Dahrendorf und Habermas gehören zu den prägendsten Intellektuellen der Bundesrepublik. Obwohl sie entgegengesetzten ideengeschichtlichen Lagern entstammen, wirkten die beiden ungleichen Weggefährten auf je eigene Weise auf die Demokratisierung der politischen Kultur im restaurativen Adenauer-Deutschland hin. Im Krisenzeitalter der 1970er haben sich ihre utopischen Gesellschaftsentwürfe aus der frühen Bundesrepublik jedoch zusehends erschöpft: Während aus dem liberalen Missionar Dahrendorf ein skeptischer Liberaler wurde, begrub Habermas seine Hoffnungen auf die Verwirklichung des demokratischen Sozialismus und näherte sich liberalen Positionen an. Im Zuge der neokonservativen Tendenzwende, dem Ende des Nachkriegs-Booms in den 1970ern, führten die beiden fortan ein Rückzugsgefecht, das den herrschaftskritischen Furor aus vergangenen Tagen eingebüßt hatte.
